The aesthetics and science of snowflake shapes

Daniel Hueholt, Ph.D. candidate in Atmospheric Science at CSU

Abstract:

It may be that no two snowflakes are exactly alike—but there are patterns to their shapes, which arise from the atmospheric conditions in which the flakes form. In this talk, we’ll discuss the variety of real-world snowflakes ranging from familiar star-shaped crystals to eldritch polycrystalline forms. Carefully observing snow at the surface can tell us what happened in the clouds from which the flakes fell, and with a little practice, anyone can learn to interpret the meaning of snowflake shapes in the wild!

Observing weather from space

Naufal Razin, Research Scientist at the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere, CSU

Forecasters, analysts, and researchers heavily rely on satellite observations to understand the weather in places near and far, but how can they tell what the weather is like by simply looking at a satellite image? In this talk, I will present an overview of the different satellite products that help us better understand the weather- and how you can use them too!

Coral-lating corals to Colorado

Rich Karp, Graduate Student Researcher in Coral Reef Ecology, University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science

Coral reefs are valuable ecosystems which are considered the “Amazon of the ocean.” These wave-resistant habitat-creating structures can be seen from space and are incredibly vulnerable to warming oceans. I will discuss mechanisms to create resistant and resilient corals. We will also address how to scale restoration strategies and mitigate climate change impacts which will help these foundational species survive climate change.

Speaker 1: Chandler Herbst

Title: The art of emotion – re-embracing our imperfect humanity

It is hard not to get overwhelmed with all of the issues in today’s world – between figuring out what to care about, who to be angry at, and where to start fixing any of it. I can’t promise to provide the end all be all solution, but this talk will remind you of what you are in control of so that maybe together – using the skills and knowledge we each already have – we can make this world a better place for generations to come.

Speaker 2: Ben Toms

Title: The history and future of weather forecasting

Forecasting the weather must be the easiest job on Earth. You can be wrong more often than you’re right and keep your job!

Turns out, forecasting the weather has a similar level of complexity to modeling the human brain. To help us understand why, I’m going to go over the past, present, and future of weather forecasting. We’ll talk about armies of nerdy human beings, supercomputers, and artificial intelligence. This won’t make your weather forecast any better, but you will (hopefully!) appreciate the marvel of modern-day meteorology and get excited for what’s to come.
